A Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

I am honored and excited to take on the role of executive director for The Phoenix Rising Alternative School Foundation. This is an incredible opportunity that speaks to my passions, skillset, and belief; that all children should have equitable access and opportunities to succeed.

I am proud to join an organization that is committed to this shared belief.  For the last 5 years, PRASF has helped put some of our community’s most underserved students on a path to success. As you may know, our mission is to empower students at the Phoenix Rising Alternative School to rise above adversity by providing holistic and restorative justice resources. This School is a wonderful institution led by driven and dedicated staff members that produce results, and change lives. And I am thrilled to have the support of our Board Chair Melissa Baldwin and the Board of Directors as I lead this esteemed organization through an exciting new chapter with all of you.

Over the last two decades, I have dedicated my personal and professional talents toward making a positive change in the lives of the youth and their families. It’s a journey that I began as a Camp Counselor for The Sherwood Forest Camp in Lesterville, Missouri. As a 17-year-old, still developing my skills, I was lucky to learn, early on, the value of exposing underrepresented kids to new experiences and options. That experience molded me into the Youth Advocate and leader that I am today.

Driven by my passion to help our most underserved communities, I am eager to build upon the momentum PRASF has created over the last couple of years. And as the new Executive Director, I promise to keep you informed of our progress and growth as we work toward achieving our board’s strategic priorities  — including the continued development of our staff and Board of Directors, the improved use of data to evaluate our students and alumni’s progress, and the commitment to solidify funding to enhance programmatic viability and maturation.

Our vision is that every student feels loved and valued, giving them the strength and security they need to break cycles of intergenerational trauma. To achieve this, it is imperative to amplify these students’ voices. We have launched a Student Advisory Council consisting of current and former students. During our Future Directions Conference in August, the advisory council identified the needs the foundation should prioritize for our students and their families to be successful. We are very proud of these students and look forward to continuing working with them side by side to create meaningful change.

I look forward to discussing the vision I have for the foundation and how important it is for all of us to assist in impacting their lives. I believe in this community and I believe in all our collective powers combined to create sustainable change. Join me in watching these students soar!

Sincerely,

Obum Ukabam

Executive Director
